To attain its objectives of excellence the Fondation Imagine has undertaken the construction of an institute on the Necker Hospital campus. It will bring together under one roof the main actors in research and patient care in the area of genetic diseases. The project management is ensured by the Public Assistance-Hospitals of Paris (AP-HP), within the framework of a procurement contract of concept-development. The contract was awarded to Urbaine de Travaux, Valero Gadan Architects, the Jean Nouvel Ateliers and INGEROP. The group has proposed a pioneer architectural concept based on an innovative organization designed to stimulate synergies between the different teams.

The 18 990 m² building will be constructed on ground made available by the AP-HP on the site of the Necker-Enfants malades Hospital. Organized around a vast atrium suffused by natural light, it will house research laboratories and cutting-edge technologic platforms as well as space for clinical patient care for the consultations in genetics, a clinical investigation center, a center for biological resources and the reference centers for rare diseases.

Giving priority to glass and natural materials, integrating perfectly into the urban environment, the future Imagine Institute will also contain several gardens including one open to the public. The facades will be decorated with serigraphed glass evoking a DNA sequence, illustrating symbolically the mission of this Institute of Genetic Diseases.
Morphogenesis of the Necker Hospital Corner

“The corner of the boulevard du Montparnasse and the rue du Cherche Midi cannot be more Parisian. We would like it to be hospitable in the double sense of the word. Of course, the Imagine building must be functional but not in a restrictive sense of functionalism. The pleasure of working in it is one dimension of the efficiency of the research to be carried out. The image of the Imagine Institute should be one of hospitality, openness, and luminosity. The architecture of high precision light symbolizes the cutting-edge of today’s research.”

“The architecture holds within itself a real surprise, a hidden dimension. The heart of the building is full of natural light: vertically by views of the sky and horizontally by two openings onto the Northwest garden. From the interior balconies of the labs, the researchers see the space devoted to the consultations with the children and its interior garden.”
